What musicals are royalty free?

These include shows such as Fiddler on the Roof, Annie, The Sound of Music, Cabaret, Evita, The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, West Side Story, and A Chorus Line. Generally, amateur and professional theatre productions cannot legally perform musicals for which the copyright is still in force without first obtaining a license from the copyright holder.

Fortunately, many of the well-known musicals from the golden age of Broadway have lapsed into the public domain and are available royalty free.

It’s important to note, however, that there are subtle differences between the different countries in terms of copyright law and what constitutes a public domain work or not. In the UK, for example, a copyright vests in a work for 70 years after the death of its composer, meaning that the musician’s songs must remain in the copyright for around 70 years before entering into the public domain.

This can be a confusing area of music law, so it’s always best to research the laws in your country before performing any work without a license.

How much do rights to a musical cost?

The cost of rights to a musical can vary significantly and depends on many factors, including the length and complexity of the script, the source material, the author, and the popularity of the show.

Most rights deals involve rental fees that range from hundreds of thousands of dollars (for larger productions) to several thousand (for small, more localized performances). These fees generally cover the rights to perform the show and may also include the right to make modifications, record the production, and more.

Depending on the size and scope of the production, additional fees may be necessary to cover royalties, publicity, and marketing costs. Short-term rights may also be available for a significantly lower fee.

Ultimately, however, the cost of rights to a musical will be highly dependent on the specifics of the production and the show in question.

Why was Rasputin taken out of Anastasia the musical?

Rasputin was taken out of Anastasia the musical due to his complicated, disturbing backstory with its features of religious fanaticism, sexual excessiveness, and political machinations, as it was deemed to be too much for the audience and inappropriate for the family-friendly stage production.

That said, the creators of the musical did not want to leave out the important character of Rasputin and his influence in the story, so they replaced him with a figure of similar importance and mystical power—the character of Gleb, who was the imperial family’s handsome, highly competent young advisor.

Gleb represents the power of love and hope, and how a single new perspective can change the course of history. With the removal of Rasputin, Gleb ultimately serves as a counterweight to the story’s narrative forces of darkness and despair.

Moreover, the replacement of Rasputin by Gleb allows the musical to focus on the power of love and belief in oneself, which many in the audience can identify with and appreciate.

Is Rasputin in Anastasia?
