University of Louisville basketball player, Brian Bowen, was recently suspended from the team after being implicated in an alleged nationwide bribery scandal involving high-profile players, their families, and college coaches.
Bowen had committed to the Cardinals in mid-June, only to be suspended indefinitely in late September.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation alleges that Bowen’s family accepted a bribe of approximately $100,000 from Adidas executive James Gatto, who is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. According to court documents, Gatto and others were accused of paying the families of prospects to ensure they attended specific colleges sponsored by Adidas.
Bowen was among the players mentioned in the documents.
In response, the University of Louisville announced that Bowen had been “effectively suspended” from all athletic activities and that he had been “disassociated from the program”. As part of his suspension, Bowen was not allowed to participate in any basketball activities, including practices, games, team or individual camps, or club events.
He was also prohibited from having any contact with the team or its coaches. Despite the suspension, Bowen remained enrolled at the University of Louisville and is pursuing his degree.
The bribery scandal has had serious repercussions for the entire Louisville basketball program. The school has already self-imposed several penalties, and the NCAA is currently conducting an investigation into possible violations.
If the NCAA finds that Louisville has violated rules, the school could face severe sanctions, such as the canceling of wins and scholarship losses.
Bowen, who was the highest-rated recruit in Louisville’s 2017 recruiting class, remains hopeful that he will eventually be cleared of any wrongdoing and reinstated to the team. Until then, he will remain suspended indefinitely as part of the University of Louisville’s response to the bribery scandal.

” The change in direction likely had to do with the increased expectations for the team this season, driven by the potential of the recruiting class. Louisville was hoping for a more decorated season and with the new players coming in, that was an expectation the team was unable to reach.
As a result, Louisville felt a change was necessary to get the team back on track.

What happened to the Louisville player that broke his leg?
On February 20th, 2019, Louisville Cardinals player Kevin Ware suffered a gruesome leg injury during the team’s NCAA tournament game against the Duke Blue Devils. With 6:33 remaining in the first half, Ware drove to the basket and landed awkwardly on his right leg, resulting in an open fracture that broke his tibia and fibula bones.
His leg bent grotesquely in two places and he had to be carted off the court.

Additionally, the NCAA determined that the school had failed to monitor its men’s basketball program and display sufficient control over its athletics staff. As a result of the violations, the NCAA forced the school to vacate the entire 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship and all its regular season wins, remove the program’s 2013 NCAA Tournament banner and return any payments it had received from the NCAA’s post-season tournament.
